You can reduce your chances of getting infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking a few simple precautions:
Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with an alcohol-based hand wash or soap and water. Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol-based hands can use the virus that occurs on your hands.
Maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) between you and others. Why? When a person coughs, sneezes, or speaks, they spray small drops of liquid through the small nose or mouth, which may contain a virus. If you are very close if the person has the disease you can inhale he droplets including the COVID-19 virus.
Avoid visiting crowded places. Why? When people congregate, you are more likely to stay in touch with people with COVID-19 and maintain a physical distance of 1 m (3 ft).
Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth. Why? Hands can touch many surfaces and pick up viruses. After contamination, hands transmit the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus enters your body and infects you.
Make sure you and the people around you practice good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of used tissue immediately and wash hands. Why? The virus is transmitted through droplets. By maintaining good respiratory hygiene, you protect the people around you from viruses such as colds, flu and COVID-19.
Stay home until you recover, even with minor symptoms such as cough, headache, and mild fever. Is anyone bringing you supplies? If you need to leave your home, wear a mask to avoid infecting others. Why? Avoiding contact with others protects them from COVID-19 and other viruses.
If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical help, but if possible call the telephone in advance and follow the instructions of your local health authority. Why? National and local authorities will have the latest information on the status of your area. Calling in advance will help your health care provider quickly get you to the right health care facility. It protects you and helps prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.
Stay up to date on the latest information from trusted sources such as the WHO or your local and national health authorities. Why? Local and national authorities are best placed to advise people in your area on what to do to protect themselves.
