1. Turn off the fan when exiting the room.
Why? Fans do not cool the air - they only soothe people by blowing hot air on the skin. The motor on the fan actually adds heat to the room - another reason to turn it off when you leave.
How: When you leave a room, turn off the lights and electronics and turn off the fan. This is a good example for the younger generation that garbage is not always a good thing.
2. Close your curtains or leave your window shades during the day.
Why? Keeping the sun outside during the daytime heat will keep the house cool. In winter, strong sunlight comes from doing the opposite.
How: Consider taking advantage of the weather or turning your furniture around to avoid the sun. Eating breakfast near a sunny window can start your cold day.
3. Wash your clothes with cold water.
Why? Ninety percent of the energy used to wash your clothes is to heat water.
How: Cold water is just as effective for cleaning clothes today with high-capacity washing machines and detergents made from cold water.
4. Wrap or cover foods and beverages in the fridge.
Why? When foods release moisture they make it more difficult to keep the compressor unit cool.
How: It takes a few seconds to place that moisture in some plastic wrap to trap it. Even better, keep the food in a reusable container with a lid to avoid throwing away the plastic wrapper.
5. Always use cold tap water unless you really want hot water.
Why? Power is needed to heat the water to rotate the hot water tap (or to heat or heat the tap lever), even if it does not reach the tap before it is turned off.
How: Use cold water, especially for cooking. Hot water from the tap absorbs lead and other contaminants from the pipes.
